Prov 9

The contrast between wisdom and the foolish woman.

The first couple of verses set up wisdom as the hostess of a banquet; imagine a party at one of the most magnificent houses you've ever seen. The servants come to your door personally to invite you to come to the feast, complete with meat, bread and drink, in a lavishly decorated setting.  It's a place of contentment. She offers life to those who will come dine with her.

Then enter the foolish woman. She sits in the busy places of the market and cries out for passers by to follow her home. She is clamorous, or loud. The only visitors she gets are the simple, those who lack understanding. She promises to her guests the sweetness of things stolen, the excitement things done in secret. But there is a price to be paid for such things "... he knoweth not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell".

Wisdom is a teacher, the foolish woman a lover; she seeks only personal pleasure. To those who accept wisdom, they are given life. For those who follow the foolish woman - death.

Fight the good fight,
Jenny
